REFERENCE: Frequently Asked Questions
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Q: What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?
Answered by Garth Rosenberg M.D. on February 21, 2002
A: Chronic Venous Insufficiency is a disease caused by weak or damaged valves in the legs veins, resulting in swelling and color change in one or both legs. It can also cause sores on the legs, especially in the area of the ankles. When damaged valves cause ongoing leg swelling, blood begins to pool in the veins. This pooling eventually causes Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI).

Q: What are the most common treatments for Chronic Venous Insufficiency?
Answered by Steven Elias M.D. on February 20, 2002
A: In a number of instances, CVI can be cured if the site of reflux is in the superficial system. CVI caused by deep vein reflux is harder to cure and control is much more important in these cases.
