I only run the sprint distance triathlons too. Still, I've been concerned that this type of exercise is too strenuous since I did have some new veins appear after I started training (after my 1st surgery). Possibly, I trained too hard too fast, and was only semi good about elevating legs after. Never the less I'm interested in knowing how your exercise program is going with your legs. Any problems?

I don't have any spider veins like my mom did. I only have competed in mini-triathalons but thats because I don't have as much time to train as I would like.

When did you have your surgery and how much running/biking are you doing? This is a trouble spot for me. I started racing triathlons after my 1st surgery and I'm beginning to wonder if this type of exercise is not good. On another note- i'm not trying to negate the trivex procedure and I agree it's all in the doctor . That's why I found a new doc. Do you have any problems with spider veins (after surgery)? Thanks in advance SL

I had a saphenous removal and TriVex done at the same time and had a totally different experience than you. I have very big veins on my thigh and calf and you can't even tell they were there. I only took Motrin for 1 week after surgery. I had special bandages for 1 week and went in some compression stockings (they weren't even that tight) for 2 weeks. I was back biking and jogging in 10 days. I read before that you better have an experienced doctor do any vein procedure so I consulted 3 different doctors until I found the one with the most experience. I even talked to everyone I could in their waiting room before my consultation and everyone was happy with their procedures. I went to Amerivein clinic and their website is amerivein.com

I have never heard of Trivex for the saphenous vein. Two years ago I had trivex procedure on a Varicose vein on each leg. (not saphenous) 2 months ago I had micro phlebectomy stripping procedure on my left leg because a new varicose vein reappearred 3 months after my trivex surgery. (although I was running a lot at the time and am convinced that it triggered the new vein). I also had my right saphenous stripped from inner knee to groin 2 months ago. This was the ELVS procedure. (transcatheter occlussion??) Which I am sure is the best and standard procedure for Saphenous stripping. My incision (mine was 1/2 inch but normally it''s about a 1/4 inch incision) hurt for about a week after surgery but that was it. (it's just red line now) A bit of a pulling feeling where the vein used to be but I was instructed to wear a compression stocking and believe me you need it after surgery. My understanding is that trivex is not used for saphenous stripping, but is used for other varicose veins. Geez- I could go on for ever. Maybe I'll do a my experience post! I can tell you this- I've had 4 procedures and out of them all, the 2 trivex procedures were the roughest recovery. It WILL leave you with scars (where the puncture was) and you WILL have spider veins appear in place of the varicose vein. I STILL have a brown pigmentation line and indent where the vein was. My Legs hurt bad for 6 weeks, ( I mean, my 2 yr old could not even touch my leg where the surgery was without me screaming in pain) TRIVEX is rough on the leg. As I mentioned, I recently had the new vein stripped by a new Dr. ( this time I went to a Varicoes Vein Center) there was NO pain involved with the micro phlebectomy. There were a lot of tiny incisions, but most have dissappeared. I do have spider veins that have appeared where the varicose vein was, and that was a dissappointment, but I now know that is part of the deal. In December I will have them removed via sclerotherapy. Will keep everyone posted on success or not. On a final note, I did not have spider veins appear where my right upper saphenous was. (stripped by ELVS) I have begun a walk/jog program, and so far so good . I'm 38, have always been thin and active, (except for pregnancies) . And like everone else on this forum, I'm pretty down about the way my legs look and feel. Good Luck to you all- I know our situation really stinks. SL
