Carrie, There are many women out there who have clotted on bc pills, specifically the 3rd generation pills. They include Desogen, Apri, Ortho Cept and Mircette. Docs will say that they are low risk, because the amount of estrogen in them is low. I discovered that Thrombosis specialists consider them a high-risk pill, more dangerous than the first pills that came out in the 1960s. Suci http://fvleiden.org/ask/23.html

Exercise is actually very good for your recovery and for the circulation in the dvt leg. There are conflicting opinions among docs, but the old world attitude of avoiding all exercise fearing that the clot will break off is bogus. Walking is the best thing to do for your leg. My doc just said to avoid heavy pounding on the leg. I also started swimming laps again after two months. Yoga breathing is a good way to help w the healing process. I started meditation after my dvt/PE and it helps me relax. I also went back to massage, although my therapist did not touch the dvt leg until the clot was gone. Suci

Hi Carrie: You must of misunderstood when I said my clot went from "my lower abdomen to my knee", it didn't move, that is actually how long it is! My doc said ibuprofen was okay to take, contrary to some opinions. I find i'm taking less anyways. Each walk my leg feels like there is more circulation happening and the support hose (as ugly as they are) really help. I'm not sure what I'll do once I start wearing shorts. I'll have to start a new fashion trend. I have to go for blood disorder tests whenever I get off coumidim, what about you? You are so young to have it.

I'm 29. My dvt was most likely caused by the hormones in my birth control. You said your clot traveled...where was it initially? I've heard that those below the knee aren't as serious and don't usually require a hospital stay. Mine was in my knee and i had some pulmonary emboli as well so a hospital stay was required. I'm not really in much pain anymore, except when i exercise. i only take tylenol for pain as aspirin and ibuprofen can increase your INR. I'm on coumadin 2.5 to 5 mg daily.

Hi Carrie: Thanks for your reply. It has been about a month for myself also, the interesting thing I am finding out is that most people on this site had hospital stays. I was never admitted. Maybe it's our health care system. I stayed at my mother's for five days so she could give me my Heparin shots. After that I have been on my own. After my doppler ultrasound on March 21, family doctor told me the clot ran from my knee up to my lower abdomen, I had no idea it was that large so I was kind of freaked out. I called my vascular surgeon and he said not to worry just go about your daily activities. He dosen't understand what my daily activities are!!!!I run, do yoga, some eliptical training, golf, with spring coming yard work and gardening..........so after giving him the 20 questions (he is actually quite good to talk too) he recommended walking only at this point, as much as I can tolerate. So I started because I have to have a life. I have been going for an hour for about the last five days, I don't have much pain just some tightness in my thigh and then I put legs up for about 1/2 hour after. You can also do your everyday housework, upper body weights, sitting or lying down, if you are into that, they told me not to do any heavy lifting (moving furniture, boxes and such) no yoga too much twisting and stretching, no running, no abdomenal exercises, nothing that would put you at risk of injuring yourself because our blood is thin or a piece of clot could break off. Well I put myself at risk every time I get in my car. Have you tried taking ibuprofen or advil for the cramping, it may help. How much coumidin are u on and how often do you go for blood work. You know you aren't supposed to drink alcohol. I'm bouncing from 3-4mg a day, I was doing blood work every day for three weeks now am down to every other day. Ultrasounds regularily. I'm not allowed to air travel (which i had several trips planned), they give it about 6 months, but I think they are just guessing. On top of all that I'm going through a divorce and the ex is off travelling with his new hottie, so it pisses me off that I can't go anywhere. Oh well, life is one challenge after the other. At least we don't have a terminal illness. How old are you?if you don't mind me asking.

I wish i could give some advice. I too have the same questions. It's been almost a month since I left the hospital after my own dvt treatment. I no longer have pain or swelling, but walking more than a few blocks causes painful cramping in my calf. I'm assuming the clot is still there in part. I'm still on coumadin. I haven't spoken to my doctor in the past couple of weeks, but I am also curious as to how soon exercise will be a "go".

Hello. I hope I can find more information through everyone on this site. I am a 47 year old women (feeling 25) who on March 13, 2005 was diagnosed with a blood clot in my femoral vein on the left leg up in my groin. Had two doppler ultrasounds a week apart, 9 days of heparin injections, now trying to determine the proper dose of warfarin with daily blood work being done. Currently on 3 mg. per day. My left leg is still sore and swollen and am taking Motrin to relieve this. My question to everyone is this: What is the deal with exercise. I was fairly active, running, yoga, golf season is coming up here in Central Alberta, Canada. I was told to cease all strenous exercise because of the risk of the clot breaking off, it could take forever to go away, if it ever does but that is another question. If I did an hour walk every day, would that be good or bad, could Yoga, stretching, yogic breathing affect it. I'm getting different advise from the medical community. Any answers? S
