Pulmonary Embolism
Take Action
Adults over age 60 are at the highest risk for pulmonary embolism. Most people who die from pulmonary embolism have not had a diagnostic work-up to determine whether they are at risk, because the symptoms are so vague. To decrease your risk of a pulmonary embolism, do the following:
- Stop smoking
- Avoid prolonged bed rest during illnesses
- Avoid needless surgery
- When traveling, stand and walk every one to two hours
