    Diagnosis and Treatment
Isometric (non-elastic) compression can increase circulation in the leg almost immediately upon walking. It is also recommended that patients clean and cover the ulcer with a bandage on a regular basis. Once considerable healing of tissue in the leg occurs, ultrasound imaging can reveal abnormalities in the venous system and treatment of underlying causes can begin. Elevating the feet when possible, avoiding standing for prolonged periods and engaging in regular exercise and activity to increase circulation can all help prevent recurrence of ulcers. Surgery to eliminate the varicose veins may be necessary.
