    Diagnosis and Treatment
Most small clots are dissolved by the body’s own mechanisms without further damage. If necessary, treatment focuses on the administration of anticoagulants or aspirin to prevent new clot formation, and to reduce the risk of the clot moving to other parts of the body and becoming lodged in a place where it blocks blood flow (embolization). Bed rest for a short period is often recommended. Anticoagulants may also be prescribed to people who are at a high risk for blood clotting. Surgery to remove blood clots is justified in acute cases only.
