    Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnostic tests must be performed whenever a DVT is suspected. Anatomic imaging of the leg vein is accomplished via venography, ultrasound, and MRI, and this range of tests can usually provide a more conclusive diagnosis.

Treatment focuses on the administration of anticoagulants or aspirin to prevent new clot formation, and reducing the risk of (embolization). Drug therapy with medications that will dissolve the clot may also be used. A short period of bed rest may be recommended. The affected limb should be elevated to reduce swelling. Analgesics may be used to control pain.
