Jugular vein - clot
Hi everyone - my clot was found by accident (and I thank God they did). I went for an ultra-sound for some tenderness in my thyroid and while performing the ultra sound the technician saw something strange. My thyroid was fine however she saw something up higher in my jugular vein -low & behold I was told to go straight to emergency. I did not have any symptoms and have never had sugery/injury in this area.
very very rare, I was told. I went on a treatment of lovenox (14 days) and warfarin
(doses from 5 - 10 mg). Finally after 14 days my INR level got above 2 and right now i'm just on adjusted levels of warfarin. I've got lots of bruising from both the lovenox shots and taking blood (which I'm down to every other day now) The first night in emergency 11 tubes were taken because they needed to send some to McMaster hospital in Hamilton where i'm going for follow-up at the end of October. Apparently its so rare that my doctor of 30 years has never seen this and he figures the follow-up is for research - i'm to be a guinea pig........no more needles i hope. I am a healthy 50 year old - haven't been in the hospital since my youngest daughter, now 24, was born, very active but there are 2 factors which may have contributed to this - I am a smoker (been trying to quit for months with the patch - 2 months before the diagnosis) and my doctor had prescribed a low dose birth control pill (2 months worth) to straighten out my periods - menopause is coming. All the doctors i saw in the emergency roon (5 in total) do not believe the birth control pill was a factor since I use to be on them with no side effects?????? Who knows - maybe at the follow up they can figure this out. Is there any one out there that is or has experienced a clot in the jugular????
e-mail back and good luck to anyone who is now in treatment or experiencing the pain and worry/terror/stress.
