Veneous Malformation of Lower Left Leg
My 16-year-old son was diagnosed with a veneous malformation of the lower left leg at 12 years old. This causes varicose veins below the knee as well as a cluster of veins in the dorsum of his foot as a result of malformations in the superficial and deep vein systems. Some of his veins do not have sufficient valves. He is under the care of a vascular surgeon at University of Michigan Hospital. He wears a customized compression sock daily and is told to elevate his legs periodically. He has a slight atrophy of this left lower leg as compared to his right leg. This may be a result of the malformation or from wearing the compression sock. Recently, he has been experiencing pain in the inner foot area near a vein after playing sports. He was on clutches for several weeks. The pain disappeared, but comes back periodically after sleeping or being active. Please let me know if there are other patients with these difficulties or vascular surgeons who have been successful in treating this type of malformation. We don't know if this is chronic or can be addressed through surgery. The vascular surgeon plans on doing a closed venogram upon our son's full development to determine if anything can be done.
