The popliteal artery is located behind the knee; the heart is the usual source of the blood clot. Popliteal artery embolectomy is performed to restore normal blood circulation to the legs. The procedure results in restored muscular function, prevention of gangrene, and continuation of normal activities. Recovery from this surgery usually takes three weeks.
